Last week I was in Pittsburgh speaking at a Practice Management Seminar. It is always so exciting to see people who want to learn more about how they can make their business or job position better.
One of the difficult things about going to seminars is that you usually end up with a long list of things that you want to change right away and become overwhelmed as to where to begin.
Throughout the seminar I heard several of the speakers address this very problem. Their suggestion was to just take the top two or three items on your list and begin with the first one. The rest of the list will still be there when you are ready to move on.
If you try to change too many things at once, you either will lose your drive or drive yourself crazy. Either way, most likely, you will fail at completing any change successfully.
Another precaution that was given to attendees; was to realize when they returned to work on Monday all pumped up, that there was a good chance that life and work would get in the way of beginning their list and they would become disappointed or feel down because they did not get to move forward as they had expected.
One way to beat these blues is to write those first three changes down on a card and keep it with you to look at often. There is something about writing them down and looking at them that keeps you moving in the right direction toward beginning and completing them. You do not want to lose sight of the changes you want to make.
Seminars are great to stir up the coals that may be burning out with your job. Being realistic about accomplishing the changes in appropriate time frames is the key to moving forward with them.
