Do You Agree?

Many times people think that it is okay to “fudge” and not tell the truth.  They make it seem that telling “a little white lie” is apparently not suppose to be bad… (not sure how they figure that?).

They feel that half truths are okay, because you really are telling some of the truth.  People tend to believe that if they can get away with not telling the truth because it will save them from some sort of “negative consequences” that it is okay.

Why would they think that?  Either you tell the truth, the whole truth or if you do not then you are telling a lie.  There is no in between that is really acceptable.

It is better to tell the truth and suffer the consequences than to be considered a person who is not a reliable source and that what they say cannot be trusted.

I agree with Randy Pausch….tell the truth and tell it all of the time.

What do you think?

  1. I think that there is a place for withholding the truth in some instances. However, I believe that should only be done when it is for the benefit of the receiver, not the giver. For example if your friend asked you what you thought of her dress that she had just bought, or her new dining table, I do not see there would be any benefit in saying that you thought they were revolting. The truth can still be told, such as ‘the colour is great’ without offending her. Likewise, if an employee had worked really hard on a project and made a complete mess of it, they still need words of encouragement, not the “total” truth.

I understand why people tell half-truths,it is so that they do not suffer the consequences of the whole truth. The truth is the truth and there is no half in it.

With that said, I do believe that there are ways to tell the truth, if it is going to hurt someone, in a better way, but still telling the truth. It takes time to think it through, but it can be done.

Believe me I struggle with this in situations as everyone does. But in the end…. the truth is always the right thing.

No one can come back on you if it is the real truth…
